Volvo Ends C70 Production at Uddevalla

Half a decade ago, Volvo started production of the Volvo C70 in Uddevalla, Sweden. As a joint venture between the automaker and Pininfarina S.p.a., the plant has displayed high-quality assembly and retained a team of well-skilled workers. However, in light of recent re-evaluations, Volvo will cease production in Uddevalla in 2013.

Plans for re-organization began this past March when the two companies decided to split, giving Volvo full-ownership of the Uddevalla facility. The automaker took a hard look at the economic gains of continuing with C70 production and chose to give it a rest. Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO, explains that while product quality is high, quantity is not. At this point in time the plant utilizes only 65-percent of its production capacity.

"The Uddevalla plant delivers cars with a very high quality," says Jacoby. "However, a car manufacturer of Volvo's size cannot, from a financial standpoint, justify a plant that manufactures one single model in the low volumes we have today."1

Though the plant will shut-down, its workers will not be left out in the cold. The automaker promises its valued Uddevalla team members a job at any of the other Volvo Car Corporation units across Sweden. Production of the beloved Volvo C70 will eventually find a new home as well. While waiting to see where the C70 will head next, Lovering Volvo in Concord invites you to check out any of the other new Volvo models we have here today.
